Golden History Moment

1100 Washington Avenue, west side – click to enlarge

I received a note from a reader yesterday, asking where this photo was taken. It’s the west side of the 1100 block of Washington Avenue–a vignette we know well, but it’s missing some key pieces. The BIG RED BOOT building has been replaced by the brick building that’s now home to Baby Doe’s Clothing. The little white building–possibly a house–has been replaced by the brick building that holds the Golden Quilt Company.

Here’s another photo that appeared in yesterday’s article about Inspection Day–most of the buildings have been replaced over time in this block, but the Transcript building is still there, and the corner building that served as a barber shop for so long is still recognizable in its new iteration as part of the Buffalo Rose.

The Golden Gem Theater building on the south corner of 13th and Washington is original. The Linder Hardware building on the north corner was replaced–first by Hested’s Department Store and now by Gateway Station.

I didn’t include this one in yesterday’s article, but it shows the same 1924 Inspection Day parade. The Loveland Building was a grocery store at that time, and now contains the Old Capitol Grill.

The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org
