This is the first day of classes for School of Mines students.
Closures
This Saturday, August 24th, Golden will be hosting a bike race. Washington Avenue (11th – 13th St.) will be closed from 1PM Friday through 8PM Saturday. 12th Street (Miners Alley to Prospector Alley) will also be closed, beginning at 1PM Friday. See the full list of weekend street closures.
Since the street closures will block access to the store, Meyer Hardware will be closed all day on Saturday. They will have special extended hours (8AM-6PM) on Sunday the 25th.
44th Avenue will be closed from at least 11:15AM-2:30PM on Saturday. Since this blocks the only entrance to the Colorado Railroad Museum, they will also be closed on Saturday.
The Community Center will be closed all week for maintenance. They will re-open next Monday, the 26th.
Tonight:
6-7PM – Thru-Hiking the Great Plains Trail, Bent Gate
Come hear a story about a hike’s journey over the newly established Great Plains Trail. It’s a story of adventure and discovery on the first-ever thru-hike of this newly established resource. Stretching for 2200 miles across rolling grasslands, through rocky canyons and over forested ridges, the Great Plains Trail aims to be America’s next great adventure. Follow along as Strider traverses this trail from the desert of west Texas to the Canadian Border, in an attempt to raise awareness and generate support of this great resource, highlighting the greatest history and scenery of the Great Plains.
6:30PM – The Downtown Development Authority will meet in City Council Chambers. They have a policy saying that cultural events will only be funded once–after that, they are expected to be self-supporting. In fact, cultural events (such as last night’s free Jefferson Symphony concert in Parfet Park) aren’t designed to generate revenue–they are designed to bring the community together. As an ancillary benefit, those attending the event often shop in the stores and dine in the restaurants. Despite their policy, the DDA has often voted to continue funding cultural events. Tonight, they will discuss whether this policy should be reconsidered. See the meeting packet for more information….
