Coronavirus Update

Public Health References
CDC * Colorado * Jefferson County * City of Golden

The State-Wide Stay-at-Home Order is in effect through April 11, 2020.

Jefferson County’s case count page says that as of 5PM yesterday, there were 152 “confirmed, probable, or suspected or under investigation” cases in Jefferson County. There have been 4 deaths and 22 are hospitalized. There are 12 known cases in Golden.

Civic News

The Downtown Development Authority met last night and voted to pay 50% of April rent up to a maximum of $2000 for businesses directly impacted by COVID-19 within the DDA boundary. It is estimated that approximately 110 businesses qualify. The application will be on guidinggolden.com/helping-golden some time today. The DDA is funded through incremental sales and property taxes generated in the district as well as a special five mill downtown property tax. Typically, DDA funds are limited to use within the downtown district.

Congratulations to all involved for mastering the meeting technology–a laudable example of civic transparency. Community Development Director Glueck stressed that they had no obligation to broadcast their meetings, but I certainly hope they will continue to do so. No word yet on where they will post the video, but check the Agenda Page or GCO.TV.

An Inexplicable Golden History Moment

The March 25, 1965 Colorado Transcript featured a set of photos with the headline “Blindfolded Driver Cruises Golden.” No explanation is given as to why he was driving around blindfolded. The Police Chief was riding with him, so it must have been a sanctioned activity. This seems like a misguided practice, and I’m glad we no longer do it today.

It was kind of fun to catch glimpses of Foss Drug, the Big M Lounge, and the Golden Theater in the background of the photos though.

Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and many thanks to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
