Ethics in Business
The Rotary Club of Golden is conducting the 18th annual Ethics in Business Awards program in 2023. Each year the club seeks nominations from the public of those organizations in our community, both for-profit and not-for-profit, that demonstrate the highest standards of ethical business practice, integrity, and civic and social responsibility.
All nominations received by Feb. 28, 2023 will be evaluated by students in the Ethics class at the Colorado School of Mines. They will choose the winners, who, along with all nominees, will be recognized and honored at an Awards luncheon on May 5, 2023 at the Sheraton Denver West hotel. To make a nomination, go to ethics.goldenrotary.org/nominations-form/. This Ethics in Business Awards website also gives more details on the Ethics awards program, which has been an important and popular event since its founding in 2006.
Golden History Moment
Prior to 1917, Golden’s postal patrons called at the post office to collect their mail. Beginning in January of that year
Home mail delivery was inaugurated in Golden in January of 1917. Prior to that time, patrons had to visit the post office to collect their mail.
The January 4, 1917 Colorado Transcript reported on the successes and foibles encountered so far.
Many homeowners hadn’t yet attached numbers to their houses, so the postal carrier couldn’t deliver there. Some homeowners hadn’t yet learned was their street addresses were. One posted two numbers on his house–one in the 400s and the other in the 900s.
Some mailboxes were set on the porch, rather than being securely attached to the house. “…one box fell off the porch the minute mail was placed in it. A high wind was blowing at the time, and the carrier was forced to do a marathon to rescue the missives.”
Four people called the post office to complain that the carrier hadn’t delivered their mail.
“Well, perhaps they didn’t have any mail for you,” said the postmaster. “Gee, we didn’t think of that,” was the answer.
Overall, the rollout went smoothly and people were pleased with the new service.
