1886 Sanborn Map showing the original street names

I had long been aware that Golden changed its street names at some point–that 11th Street was originally 1st Street, 12th was originally 2nd, etc. Last night I was wondering exactly when that change occurred, and searched old Transcripts for the answer (which is 1904).

In researching that question, I learned something new: until that time, we also didn’t have address numbers–or street signs. The August 11, 1904 Colorado Transcript ran a front page article entitled “How Golden Buildings Should Be Numbered.” It described the system we still use today: north-south streets have even numbered addresses on the west side and odd numbered addresses on the east side. East-west streets have even numbers on the north side of the street and odd numbers on the south side.

Interestingly, we didn’t have street signs until a year later. The July 6, 1905 Colorado Transcript says, “That Golden is becoming metropolitan is evidenced by the renaming of some of the streets, placing street signs at all intersections, and establishing a system of numbering…. One never appreciates street signs until he lands in a strange place where signs and numbers are an unknown quantity and he is obliged to apply at numerous places as to the location of a certain home or business block.”

I had always wondered why advertisements in old Transcripts never included street addresses. Now I know–street addresses didn’t exist in Golden until 1904.

Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and many thanks to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
