The Be a Tool 5K Elf Run is this morning, starting at 8:30AM under the Welcome arch. Proceeds from this race support the Be A Tool program, which provides home repairs and maintenance for low-income and elderly Golden residents, to help them stay warm, safe, and dry in their homes.
This is Small Business Saturday. City staff will be stationed in from of the Visitors Center from 10-noon, serving hot chocolate and handing out reusable “Shop Small” bags. I’ve been rounding up Golden-based Small Business Saturday deals. If you don’t receive my Golden Business News email (and you should), check the www.goldentoday.com home page for a long list of today-only special offers from Golden stores.
Why is it important to shop locally? Two main reasons: first, sales tax provides 47% of our City revenue, so it pays for our essential and non-essential services. Second, money spent with a small, locally-owned business is more likely to stay in the community, rather that accruing at some far-away corporate headquarters. Even if you’re not buying many new things, you still need groceries, and chances are you need gas too. Make a point of buying them in Golden.
Miners Alley Children’s Theater is opening their new children’s play today: The Story of the Nutcracker. Nearly everyone knows the tale of the Nutcracker: A gift to Marie from her Godfather Drosslemeier on Christmas Eve. Sadly, the beautiful Nutcracker gets broken and later that night Marie goes to check up on it. To her surprise, it has come alive, and a story-within-the-story begins! The audience is invited to become a part of the Nutcracker story and everyone gets to live happily ever after. Today’s performance is at 1PM, and tickets are $10 each.
Tonight’s Music:
