The Colorado Business Committee for the Arts studies this issue and produces a biennial report on their latest data. Their Deputy Director, Meredith Badler, will present the study and answer questions. Community members, city officials and staff, and members of the arts & culture community are encouraged to attend.

Here’s a little extra incentive: the meeting will be held in the Miners Alley Performing Arts Center (that is–the former Meyer Hardware store). If you’ve been wanting to see its current status, here’s your opportunity!

Golden History Moment

Colorado Transcript – June 13, 1935

The April 21, 1955 Colorado Transcript reported that Nils Christiansen, former owner of the Golden Plunge, had made a proposal to the city. He offered to build an outdoor pool if the City would donate five acres of land for that purpose. Council agreed to study the proposal.

The community was very interested in having a public pool. The Plunge (still extant in the basement of the Buffalo Rose) had been closed since 1940. Children taking swimming lessons during these years used the pools at the School or Mines or the Industrial School.

Colorado Transcript – April 21, 1960

The April 21, 1960 Colorado Transcript included a photo showing the City’s new municipal pool under construction. In the intervening five years, citizens had approved a bond issue to build a new city hall, police station, fire station, library, and swimming pool. They started with the pool.

The 1960 outdoor pool was located where the Golden Farmers Market now operates – enlarge

The outdoor pool was closed after the Golden Community Center opened.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
