Golden History Moment

Last week, I mentioned George West a couple of times. On Saturday, I described him as an elderly Civil War veteran observing Memorial Day in 1905. On Monday, I talked about his military career and his connection to Camp George West.

Golden history fans love George West, firstly because he founded The Colorado Transcript, which is still publishing more than 150 years later, and secondly because he was a great story-teller. A classic George West yarn is funny and ends with alcohol. Here is a classic George West story:

George West built the Boston Company store north of Clear Creek. William Loveland built the Loveland store south of the Creek, about where the little pocket park (called Loveland Gardens) is now located. Click to enlarge

William Loveland and George West both arrived in the spring of 1859 and each set about building a store.  West chose the north side of Clear Creek, in what is now Parfet Park.  Loveland built on the south side, now the downtown business district.  The two competed to see who would finish first, thus winning the honor of having the first store building in Golden.  As the two buildings neared completion, it became clear that West had enough shingles to finish his roof and Loveland did not.  West and his crew went to bed, confident that on the morrow they would win the race.

The next morning, they woke to find that their remaining stock of shingles had been stolen—and that Loveland was finishing his roof.  Later that morning, Loveland sent over a five gallon keg of “the best whiskey in his stock,” so all was forgiven.
