Golden History Moment
The August 22, 1940 Colorado Transcript reported that more than 3,000 people had visited the Jefferson County Pioneer Museum during the town’s annual Golden Days celebration.
Golden’s History Museum was originally a project of the Roosevelt administration’s Words Progress Administration. When funding ran out, the museum was closed. Occasionally it was opened for special occasions (such as Golden Days) and staffed by volunteers.
The museum went through several homes–first the old North School at Washington & 6th Street, then the old Courthouse at Washington & 15th. When the old Courthouse was demolished in the early ’60s, the County turned the museum over to the City of Golden. The City was building its new municipal center at the time, and space was included for the museum. It remained in City Hall until the old library next door became available–and there it remains!
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts.
