Many neighbors attended last night’s planning commission meeting, expressing concern about the new 44 apartment development at 24th and Ford Street.  They felt that the project was way too dense for the available land, that there was already too much traffic in that area, and that the on-site parking was inadequate–that overflow parking would fill the streets of the surrounding neighborhood.  Some members of the commission expressed similar concerns, but they approved the project anyway.  Planning Chair Matt Burde was the only dissenting vote.

One commissioner likened the Chicago-based developer to a benevolent unicorn who had swooped in to solve our affordable housing problem.  It was a very discouraging night for those who thought that public comment might affect the outcome.

Those of us who assumed that we would never experience parking problems because we don’t live in the historic downtown had a sudden, rude awakening.

Tonight is the third and final night of the Columbine Bar’s Backyard Bluegrass Series.  Golden’s own Thunder and Rain will be performing, starting at 7PM.  The cost is $10 at the door.  The Columbine Cafe/Bar at 15630 South Golden Road (map) has been in the same family for 83 years.  That takes them back to 1933–the year that Prohibition was repealed!  They have a great back yard, perfect for live music.

The sounds of fiddles and banjos will fill the summer air at the Columbine Café for this three part bluegrass series  Join us at Golden’s newest live music venue, in one of the best backyard patios around.  Brings a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the summer breeze and some serious pickin’.  Campfire Bluegrass Jam will start after the show.  All levels are welcome.

Jean Marie will be performing jazz standards at the Golden Hotel tonight from 6-9.   Curtis Hawkins will be at Golden Moon Speakeasy from 7-10.

Don’t forget the geology lecture, sponsored by the Friends of the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum.  Socializing starts at 6, and the lecture starts at 7 in the Ben Parker Student Center, 310 Maple Street (map).
