Many neighbors attended last night’s planning commission meeting, expressing concern about the new 44 apartment development at 24th and Ford Street. They felt that the project was way too dense for the available land, that there was already too much traffic in that area, and that the on-site parking was inadequate–that overflow parking would fill the streets of the surrounding neighborhood. Some members of the commission expressed similar concerns, but they approved the project anyway. Planning Chair Matt Burde was the only dissenting vote.
One commissioner likened the Chicago-based developer to a benevolent unicorn who had swooped in to solve our affordable housing problem. It was a very discouraging night for those who thought that public comment might affect the outcome.
Those of us who assumed that we would never experience parking problems because we don’t live in the historic downtown had a sudden, rude awakening.
Tonight is the third and final night of the Columbine Bar’s Backyard Bluegrass Series. Golden’s own Thunder and Rain will be performing, starting at 7PM. The cost is $10 at the door. The Columbine Cafe/Bar at 15630 South Golden Road (map) has been in the same family for 83 years. That takes them back to 1933–the year that Prohibition was repealed! They have a great back yard, perfect for live music.
