CITY MEETING
6:30PM Downtown Development Authority Meeting @ City Hall
The DDA will consider a grant request from the Ace Hi Tavern. They plan to refresh their sign and are requesting a $4105 exterior grant, or half the cost of the sign. They will continue to discuss the details of a TIF (tax increment financing) agreement with Clayworks (CoorsTek). The City had been considering a “common consumption area” in the parking lot by the former Meyer Hardware. This would be an area with tables and chairs where patrons of any restaurant or the non-dining public could sit. A committee met and concluded that it was not needed. The City has done some repair work and lighting improvements in the 1250 Jackson Street garage with the goal of making it feel safer, thus encouraging people to park there. The new owners of 1104-1106 Washington (the former floral shop and antiques store) are finding their renovation plans to be cost-prohibitive. Staff is discussing ways the DDA could assist.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The July 17, 1930 Colorado Transcript reported on a fire on Lookout Mountain. A Denver firm had purchased the rails left by the old Lookout Mountain Funicular. The crew decided that the easiest way to bring the rails down to the waiting trucks below would be to push them, and let them roll down the hill.
Unfortunately, the steel rails struck rocks on the way down, producing showers of sparks. The sparks ignited a fire in the dry grass, and soon the mountainside was in flames.
Golden’s volunteer firemen worked to douse the flames, and three truckloads of boys from the Industrial School came to help. Together, they managed to quell the fire just as it was reaching the trees at the top of the mountain.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
