GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

Golden Community Center in Lions Park – enlarge

In 1992, the Golden community had been considering locations to build a new community center. One of the leading contenders was an area called “Baseball Gulch,” near the high school, off 24th street. The other was the Golden Junior High football field, which was north of Lions Park. The Junior High had closed in 1988 (with the students moving to Bell Middle School), so the school no longer needed a football field.

The July 7, 1992 Golden Transcript announced that the Parks & Recreation board was recommending the Lions Park location. City Council planned to hold a public hearing on the decision on July 9th. They anticipated a spirited debate. Some neighbors near both locations were opposed, because they feared increased traffic. Other neighbors (near both locations) hoped to have the center near their houses.

Even before the public hearing, the Transcript was already full of comments from the public:

You’re jamming it down our throats. You are up to something.

We don’t want it in our neighborhood. We don’t want the noise. We don’t want the traffic.

I think if you take the heart of the community and move it away from the center of the community, it will hurt.

“The seniors in Golden are active seniors. They don’t need to creep in some special door,” one elderly lady said of the separate facility with independent parking and entrance possible at Lions Park.

Name another 52,000-square-foot building in Golden. You are concerned about views from the decks of the rec center, but you are not at all concerned about our view.

There is nothing wrong living next to a big building. It isn’t going to stink.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
