Golden History Moment
The April 2, 1925 Colorado Transcript reported that Golden’s reservoir on Lookout Mountain was filling with Beaver brook water. This was welcome news, as Golden citizens were very pleased with their Beaver brook water supply. The water quality was excellent and the water pressure, falling as it did from Lookout Mountain, was good.
Some years our Beaver brook supply failed, either because the reservoir was dry or because the pipes that ran from the brook to the reservoir froze. When that happened, we had to pump water from Clear Creek. The Creek was notoriously polluted at that time, with runoff from the mines and mills upstream, so that water was a very poor substitute.
The pipe line has been empty since the 17th of January. It was necessary to drain it at that time because of lack of water in Beaver brook, which condition was caused by an unprecedented dry summer, fall and winter. The pipe was not frozen.
In 1925, the Water Commissioner had been watching the reservoir with great concern, as the level got lower and lower. He knew the reservoir wouldn’t refill until spring runoff began and the level of water in Beaver brook rose. Golden residents were urged to conserve water. It was with considerable relief that he observed water flowing in from Beaver brook once again.
Water from Beaver brook is again flowing into the reservoir on top of Lookout mountain, and the danger of having to go back to water from the old pumping plant has been averted.
