Golden History Moment

Golden Armory – enlarge

When the United States entered World War I, in April of 1917, Golden turned to a wartime footing. The students at the School of Mines began daily military drills. Soldiers and officers were billeted in the Armory building. The Rifle Range–formerly a private shooting club–became a military camp. Young men were required to register for the draft.

The July 26, 1917 Colorado Transcript included an article titled “Notes from the Armory,” which included several brief news items about the growing military presence in Golden. Enlistments and promotions of local boys were reported. City Park had been turned into a military camp, with tents and recently-added electric lines, sewer and water hookups, and a large cook shack.

All the men stationed in Golden, who have not previously received the typhoid inoculation, were given the preventive Monday.
