GOLDEN CULTURAL ALLIANCE MEMBER: THE GOLDEN LIBRARY

The February 11, 1909 Colorado Transcript reported that the Golden Improvement Club planned to establish a Boy’s Reading Room. A stationery company had offered to contribute one hundred books and prominent citizen Richard Broad promised an additional twenty-five. They anticipated many other book donations; however, they needed to fund a building to accommodate the books (and the boys).

The conversation continued throughout that year, as duly reported in the Transcript. The vision grew to include a gymnasium and a swimming pool, but concrete plans continued to elude the group, and the idea eventually fizzled out.

In 1913, the combined women’s clubs of Golden–Bay View, Golden Fortnightly, the Progressive Club, and Thursday Musicales–took up the challenge.

A movement is on foot among the various ladies clubs of Golden to unite in the effort to have a club building erected with commodious rooms which can be used as meeting places for all the clubs. It is also their hope to get a library started here, and have one room of the proposed new building used as a reading room. Committees have been appointed and it is believed action will be taken in a short time.

The ladies led a massive fund-raising campaign and, in less than a year, opened a library for girls as well as boys–and grown-ups too.

The February 11, 1915 Colorado Transcript reported that “The Golden Library and Improvement association is nearing the close of its first year as an incorporated body.” The article reported that the association had purchased a building, furnished it, and acquired 2700 books and periodicals.

(Let’s hear it for the ladies!)
