GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

The June 27, 1978 Golden Transcript reported that two lives had been lost in Clear Creek, and the sheriff’s Mounted Posse was leading a search effort.

The first victim was a 24-year-old man who was rafting alone near tunnel 1. He was thrown from his raft as it went over a small falls. His raft and vest had been found, but his body was still missing. The second victim was a 17-year-old male who fell out of his tube in the same area, about 2 hours later.

“The waterways emitting from the canyons are running extremely high,” said Undersheriff Denzil Boeks. He estimated that seven persons lost their lives in Clear Creek last year and three in Bear Creek.

The two young men disappeared on June 25 and Deputies searched the banks of the Creek for several days with support from “the Sheriff’s Department helicopters, a tactical squad from Lowry Air Force Base, the Arvada Fire Protection District, and the Golden Rescue Squad.” On June 29th, they decided to throw dynamite into deep holes in the Creek, in hopes of dislodging the bodies. The effort was unsuccessful.

Because of the dangerous conditions and the upcoming 4th of July holiday, the Sheriff’s Department decided to close the Creek until the water level receded.

The 17-year-old was recovered a week after his disappearance. An employee of the Farmer’s Highline Canal found him at a floodgate near 10th Street and Vasquez. The 24-year-old was found on July 9th, in the same ditch, in the Fairmount area.
