Today’s Concert in the (School of Mines) Library is guaranteed to delight: Historic Cowboy Songs by Rex Rideout. Being near St. Patrick’s Day, many songs will be of Celtic origin. The dusty prairie with a wee bit o’ green.
Join us as Rex Rideout presents the songs of the early cowboys. Rex sings of the American West, from the times of the early explorers, the fur trade, the Civil War and the cattle drive era to the end of the 19th century. From Lewis and Clark to Jack Thorp and Badger Clark, he brings to life the music from another time on the instruments from that time. Raised in the community of Scotch Ridge, Rex gained an appreciation of Celtic ways. He learned to work with the axe, the blacksmith hammer and to play the fiddle. This led to a fascination of early American music, ranging from the Civil War to the Cowboy era and tracing many of the songs back to their Celtic beginnings. Rex presents well-known songs and then sings the original sources of popular standards.
As the proprietor of Time Travel Music, Rex has performed at countless historic sites and museums across the West, playing fiddle, banjo, mandolin and other instruments. His music has been featured on television and radio, such as CBS Sunday Morning, museums like the Western American Art collection at the Denver Art Museum, and the soundtracks of three National Park Service visitor center films. Rex also plays fiddle in the blockbuster Dreamworks film, “Cowboys & Aliens.”
Concerts in the Library are sponsored and organized by Arthur Lakes Library. All performances start at noon and take place in the Boettcher Room. Performances are free and open to the public. Bring your lunch, sit back, relax, and enjoy music, poetry, theater, and other fine entertainments!

The Beautiful Junk Sale is open today from 8:30AM-7PM at the Jeffco Fairgrounds (map). All proceeds go to support The Action Center.
Since the public schools let out early today, the Golden Library will celebrate Freaky Friday from 2-3:30 with games, crafts, and Legos.
Golden High School’s Stage Right Productions will perform Big Fish – The Musical tonight and tomorrow. In the present-day real world, sixty-year-old Edward Bloom faces his mortality while Will prepares to become a father himself. In the storybook past, Edward ages from a teenager, encountering a Witch, a Giant, a Mermaid, and the love of his life, Sandra. The stories meet as Will discovers the secret his father never revealed. Performances take place Friday and Saturday at 6:30PM, with a matinee performance at 1:30 Saturday afternoon. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, seniors, and thespians. The High School is located at 701 24th St. (map).

Saturday Preview:
Alpha Phi Omega at the School of Mines will host a Jamboree for Outstanding Youngsters tomorrow from 10AM to 2PM. The theme is “Fun Under the Sea.” JOY is an annual carnival hosted by the APO chapter at the Colorado School of Mines. The event was originally in support Camp Fire’s ‘Absolutely Incredible Kid Day’, but has since expanded into a community carnival aimed at making children feel incredible as well as inspiring them to follow STEM fields.
