Golden History Moment

The November 13, 1941 Colorado Transcript has a brief article under “Unwritten History.”

Before the School of Mines gymnasium was built and the Integral club was started the Miners’ “hang out” was the Opera House Cigar Store. Until the “wee sm’ hours” card games and billiard contests were underway at what was then known as “Tommy’s Smokehouse.” Tommy Normile, known by every Mines student, was the proprietor of the unofficial Mines club.

The Golden Opera House was built in 1879. The performance space was on the second floor and the first floor housed several stores and restaurants over the years. Today, the building is the home of the Ace Hi Tavern.

I remembered seeing an earlier reference to card games at the Opera House Cigar Store, and found it in my notes about the Golden Illuminating Company. In another “Unwritten History” section, published on July 10, 1930, the Transcript reported that the lights in Golden used to grow dim when the engineer from the power company got involved in a card game at the Opera House Cigar Store. When he noticed the dim lights, he would rush across the street to the power house, stoke up the boiler, then return to his game.

Tommy Normile (of “Tommy’s Smokehouse”) owned the store from 1905 to 1910. He sold candy as well as cigars, and offered billiards as well as after-hours card games. The Golden History Museum has a 5 cent trade token from the Opera House Cigar Store in its collection.

Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
