6:30PM City Council meets tonight in City Council Chambers. See the meeting packet for details on any of the following.
The Consent Agenda includes the items that will automatically be approved unless someone asks to discuss them:
• Having History Colorado approve tax credits for historic preservation projects instead of our own Historic Preservation Board.
• Accepting revised FEMA maps regarding flood zones. This will result in several homes along Arapahoe Gulch being required to purchase flood insurance.
• Consenting to the settlement of refugees within Golden.
• Raising the City Attorney’s compensation rate to $195/hour.
• Awarding a contract for $245,739.02 to update the City’s server and data storage facilities.
Foothills Animal Shelter will present a status report.
They will discuss and vote on an ordinance regarding nicotine and tobacco products, which would ban sale or consumption for anyone under 21; require that businesses selling those products be licensed, and ban the sale of all flavored nicotine and tobacco products, including vaping products.
They will discuss the process of “engaging the public” on what to do with our new 7.27 acres of land and the Coors Office Building in Goosetown. They will be hiring three teams of consultants to help them conduct that process. The City will be allowing partial access to the Coors building this Saturday from 9-11AM.
6PM Lecture at the History Museum: An Empire of the Mind: Science and American Foreign Relations since WWII
The sciences played a critical role in American foreign policy after World War II. From atomic energy and satellites to the green revolution, scientific advances were central to American diplomacy in the early Cold War, as the United States leveraged its scientific and technical preeminence to secure alliances and markets. The growth of applied research in the 1970s, exemplified by the biotech industry, led the United States to promote global intellectual property rights. Priorities shifted with the collapse of the Soviet Union, as attention turned to information technology and environmental sciences. Today, international relations take place within a scientific and technical framework, whether in the headlines on global warming and the war on terror or in the fine print of intellectual property rights. This lecture provides the historical background necessary to understand the contemporary geopolitics of science. Learn more and register….
