5PM Planning Commission Meeting – CoorsTek Hearing, Continued @ City Hall
PLEASE NOTE THE EARLY START TIME!
This is a continuation of the hearing regarding the CoorsTek re-zoning. The hearing began March 10th and continued on April 6th. They have not yet reached the point where they hear public comment, but may reach it tonight. They have received a lot of written comments, which appear in last month’s meeting packet. I’m not sure whether any additional comments will appear in tonight’s last night’s packet.

The business meeting will be followed by an executive session (no public, no cameras). The purpose is “to receive legal advice on the application of the review standards for rezoning and official development plans and the right to impose conditions regarding the 600 9th St. Coorstek – Rezoning and Alley Vacation applications.”

Golden History Moment:
The Foss Mural – Part 1

Mural on the Foss building (map) – Google Street Images – enlarge

The Foss Family is having their mural on 13th Street refreshed. Local historian Richard Gardner provided them with some notes about the historical details, which included some details I didn’t know!

Adolph & Louisa Coors – enlarge

This panel shows brewery founder Adolph Coors with his wife, Louisa. The brewery in the background is as it appeared in the late 19th century.

Bishop Randall, founder of the School of Mines – enlarge

The School of Mines was founded by Episcopalian Bishop George Maxwell Randall. He turned it over to the state to it could be a state-funded school. The burro in the picture is “Blaster,” the school’s mascot. Burros were used to haul ore carts inside mines. The building shown in the background is Engineering Hall. Built in 1894, it is the oldest building on the campus.

Buffalo Bill – enlarge

Buffalo Bill, according to Rick Gardner, drove wagons through Golden as a 12-year-old teamster. There are a couple of fun inclusions in this picture. The bottle of beer features an original 19th century design Coors label. The ram’s head on the wall, pointing upstairs, is a reference to the Golden Ram restaurant that used to be upstairs in that building.

To be continued….
