CITY MEETING

5:30PM GURA Board Meeting @ City Hall
The Golden Urban Renewal Board will work on the goals & accomplishments report they plan to give to City Council in an upcoming study session. The original terms of the Central Neighborhoods URA requires a report to Council at 10 years (which is this year–2023). A similar 10-year report will be required for the West Colfax URA next year, in 2024. No such report was required for the Parfet-Briarwood URA.

Two large mixed-use developments are in the planning stages on West Colfax. The planned flood retention area along Lena Gulch and on the Bachmann property is in design.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

1882 Birdseye View Map of Golden with the Golden Fire Brick Works Highlighted – click to enlarge

For several years, the Transcript ran occasional pieces called “Unwritten History.” They often described the wild doings from the editors’ youths. The September 11, 1941 Colorado Transcript featured this interesting tidbit:

UNWRITTEN HISTORY
Among the early brick plants in Golden was one located on the present site of the Mines baseball field above the testing plant. After several years it was abandoned and the old works, including a number of chimneys and an immense fly wheel, fell into decay.

For a number of years this old plant was a veritable amusement park for Golden’s younger generation. They scampered over the old kiln and climbed the chimneys. The fly wheel became a Ferris wheel, the youngsters clinging to the spokes, while their companions turned the wheel. Later the debris was cleared away.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
