What’s Happening in Golden Today?
9AM Visit Golden Committee @ Public Works Building, 1445 10th Street (map)
The Community Marketing Committee (Visit Golden) will hear from the Planning Director and a group of consultants about a new parking study. The committee will be asked to provide insight on parking and transportation challenges. The consultants will ultimately suggest new parking management solutions to “help the City manage its parking resources more efficiently.”
The second topic is a proposed change to the bylaws, which would eliminate several positions from the board (the Golden Cultural Alliance, South Golden Merchants, Downtown Merchants, Golden Ridge Merchants, and North Golden Merchants) and create several new ones (representatives from the restaurant industry, retail industry, lodging industry, experiences industry, craft beverage industry, meeting/event venue industry, and a cultural organization member). Coors Brewery Tours, the Visitors Center, the Chamber, EDComm, the DDA, and an at-large position would remain unchanged.

Golden History Moment
Earle A. Johnson Elementary School was dedicated on November 10, 1960. By the late 1950s, Golden’s centrally-located school, Mitchell Elementary, was overcrowded. Much of Golden’s growth was happening on the south end of town, so the R1 school district looked for land south of downtown. They found it when the state agreed to sell off parts of the State Industrial School property.
Earle Johnson was a long-time music teacher in Golden’s schools. When he began teaching in 1899, he rode a circuit between Englewood, Arvada, Wheat Ridge, and Golden schools. In 1930 (31 years into his teaching career!), he accepted full-time employment in Golden. He taught here until retiring in 1954 and was 87 when he died in 1966.
Many current residents may not remember Earle Johnson Elementary, as it closed and was replaced by Shelton Elementary in 1994. The campus and some of the buildings from Earle Johnson are now used as Connections Learning Center.
