9AM Public Art Commission Meeting @ City Hall
The Public Art Commission will discuss public art opportunities for the Hwy 6/Heritage Road interchange. They will discuss a “public art framework” that they are developing. They had a kickoff meeting with a consulting group on the 21st and will recap that discussion and decide on next steps.

At their last meeting, they discussed a new group of advisors that they’re forming, calling them “Art Partners.” They reviewed a list of candidates (not included in the meeting packet) and discussed whether they could include people from outside the Golden limits. The sticking point, of course, is that the PAC is funded with City of Golden tax money. They have been working with a $50K/year budget and will request $80K/year beginning next year.

Mural on the Golden Hotel in 2010

Also discussed last month–the Commission had planned to post a mural on the Golden Hotel, but when they showed their chosen piece to the hotel owner, he said he would prefer something more “western”–more in keeping with the hotel’s look and brand. Since the Public Art Commission wants to select the art, the plan is on hold.

Golden History Moment

Golden Transcript photo showing steam from the Coors Brewery – January 16, 1975

The October 7, 1980 Golden Transcript reported that three Colorado School of Mines students would be studying the possibility of using excess steam from Coors to heat private homes. They estimated that the wasted steam from the brewery could heat 5,000-36,000 single family homes.

The research was done under the direction of Chemical Engineering Professor Dendy Sloan. The writer interviewed representatives from Coors (Sam Baxter), Public Service (Bill Davis), and the Solar Energy Research Institute (Dana Moran), who all found the prospect intriguing.

When the students presented their results in December, Bill, Joe, and Jeff Coors all attended (no pressure there!). No one was ready to commit at that time, but all agreed there was potential to move forward.

In 1982, the brewery and the school came to an agreement and Coors laid a 6″ pipe to run from the brewery, under the visitors parking lot, under 14th Street, to the CSM boilerhouse. For many years after, the School used Coors steam to heat campus buildings.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
