Cold Commencement, Greener Golden, Railroad History, and Live Music

In light of the cool and possibly rainy weather, this morning’s commencement ceremony has been moved indoors and split over three time periods. Check the Mines website for the particulars.

Tomorrow is expected to be less cool and not rainy. That’s good, because it’s Greener Golden Day. That means that from noon-3PM, you can pick up for pre-ordered Garden in a Box, tour the Community Garden, learn about the City’s Sustainability programs, and learn how to deal with green waste. I can’t guarantee this for this year, but in the past, I know they’ve had some extra plants available for purchase.

My railroad-loving friends are in a frenzy of excitement today, because this is the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. I had hoped to join the celebration in Promontory Point, Utah, but tickets were sold out!

Did you know that Golden was an important railroad town? Our town was established in 1859, as the gold rush started. Golden nearly faded away during the Civil War, but William Loveland promoted it tirelessly and kept it alive. After the War, Loveland tried to persuade the Union Pacific Railroad to route the Transcontinental Railroad through Golden. (They looked at the mountains west of Golden and laughed at the suggestion.)

Failing to attract the Union Pacific, Loveland built his own railroad–the Colorado Central–and made Golden its headquarters. The Colorado Central came from Denver into the Goosetown neighborhood, then along 8th Street and thence through Clear Creek Canyon. It served Central City, Blackhawk, Idaho Springs, and Georgetown. The 1882 map above shows Goosetown, the railroad roundhouse, and a Colorado Central train. I’ve added the Coors office building that the City is buying to provide a sense of where the old railroad was.
