Golden History Moment
The January 25, 1983 Golden Transcript described an unusual discovery made by Golden police. Foss Drug had been concerned that their nighttime janitorial staff might be stealing merchandise, so they asked the police to keep an eye on the staff as they left the store. Police noticed an employee walking out carrying a paper sack. They followed him for a few blocks before stopping him on Jackson Street, near the post office. They asked to see the contents of the bag and he refused, but they looked anyway.
The bag did not contain stolen merchandise. It contained a homemade pipe bomb, “capable of ‘doing extensive structural damage.'”
Terry Evans was a 1977 graduate of the School of Mines. He had been working for a mining firm, but when the minerals market collapsed, he took a job cleaning for the drugstore. Evans said that building bombs was his hobby, and he enjoyed exploding them in remote areas. He said he had been engaged in pyrotechnics since 1965, “when he first learned that he could order explosive chemicals from Popular Science magazine.”
After discovering the bomb, police searched his apartment and found “a small arsenal of handguns, explosives and ‘how-to’ bomb books.”
Many of the items were confiscated for evidence. But Evans said they left enough black powder to allow him to build other bombs.
“They are ignorant,” he noted. “They obvious didn’t know what they were looking for.”
Evans was free on $2,000 bond, but faced up to four years in jail. I was unable to discover the results of his trial.
