Change of Venue?
A few years ago, prior to a USA Pro Challenge bike race, the city moved the prospector statue from its place at 13th and Washington and replaced it with a statue of cyclist Levi Leipheimer.
Since the cycling statue has been removed for repair, a group of citizens is requesting that the prospector & burro be reinstated at 13th & Washington. It’s a nice piece, with some local touches such as an M on the gold pan (for the School of Mines), and “Coors” on the canteen.
If you would like to second this request, send the Public Art Commission a note via their city staff person: amenefee@cityofgolden.net or stop in and sign the petition at Del’s Tonsorial Parlor, 1210 Washington Ave. The petition reads as follows:
Its time to return “Golden Touch” to its original location at the northeast comer of Washington Avenue and 13″^ Street. Now that the racing bike statue has recently been removed for repair, the perfect opportunity exists.
Golden Touch presents a friendly and warm appearance that has always been highly appreciated by Golden citizens and visitors alike. On Washington Avenue, it was always a popular photo attraction.
Golden Touch represents most of what Golden stands for and what makes our community so unique: the heritage of our gold mining past, Adolph Coors Company, and the Colorado School of Mines.
With the spring and summer tourist seasons approaching, let’s have the prospector and his burro back to its prominent and proper location.
