Golden History Moment

The United States was in the midst of an energy crisis during the 1970s, and Duke’s Plumbing and Heating at 1005 9th St. (map) was a victim of a very ’70s crime: their 26 vehicles had gasoline siphoned out of their tanks. The February 5, 1975 Transcript reported that about $220 worth of gasoline was stolen.

Dizzy Gillespie was coming to the School of Mines for a performance on February 19th. Tickets were $5.75 for adults and $3.75 for students.

As a society, we were still waffling about cigarette smoking. The R-1 school board had been studying “smoke-filled lavatories, littered parks and damage to neighboring property caused by student smokers.” In the end, the board voted to remove “possession of tobacco” from the list of behaviors that could result in suspension. Instead, they voted to announce that use of tobacco was “strongly discouraged” and smoking was to be prohibited in schools, on school grounds, and in school buses.

Foothills Art Center was hosting a sculpture exhibition, which featured 72 pieces – enlarge

The City of Arvada had included a typo in their animal control ordinance, saying that the owners of stray pets would be destroyed after 24 hours.
