Golden History Moment

Foss Drug Store, 1940s – Golden History Museum – click to enlarge

The July 3, 1941 Colorado Transcript celebrated the grand reopening of Foss Drug. The store was 28 years old by that time, but they did a significant remodel/facelift about every 10 years.

The Transcript described the redesigned store as “spacious, artistic, colorful, the last word in design, comfort and convenience for patrons…. All departments have been enlarged and lunch service added. The fountain room facilities are especially designed to please the public. The electrical appliance, refrigerator and radio departments have been moved to the basement which has been made easily accessible to those interested in these necessary facilities for the modern home.”

The store–always a major advertiser in the Transcript–outdid themselves, with two full-page ads plus in-column ads listing their Big Reopening specials.Their new soda fountain was offering 15 cent strawberry sundaes and 50 cent chicken dinners! The store experimented with many product lines over the years, and at that time they had a major appliance department in the basement.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and many thanks to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
