The October 17, 1935 Colorado Transcript reported that this group of men were well pleased with a trip they had made through Clear Creek Canyon. They drove from Golden to Idaho Springs, and concluded that it would be an excellent route for a highway. Accordingly, they set aside $1.5 million in federal highway funds to begin building the road.

You may wonder: if there was no road, how did they drive from Golden to Idaho Springs? They rode in specially-adapted automobiles that had been equipped with small locomotive engines in front and wheels suitable for train tracks beneath.

Despite this agreement amongst the movers & shakers in 1935, it took another 17 years to complete the road. There were many administrative delays, and then World War II diverted all labor and materials to the war effort. The highway finally opened in 1952. By that time, the railroad had been removed from the canyon, so the highway engineers were able to build on the old railroad bed.
