Golden History Moment

The Holland House – Golden History Museum Collection – enlarge

For nearly 40 years, the Holland House was the place to be in Golden. It was the site of club meetings, fine dining, coffee klatches, and of course, elegant lodging.

The owners–Lu and Ethel Holland–were community boosters. In 1949, Lu Holland–in his capacity as President of the Chamber of Commerce–spearheaded the effort to build the Welcome Arch over Washington Avenue.

The March 5, 1953 Colorado Transcript included a brief item saying that Lu and Ethel Holland were on trial in federal court, charged with income tax evasion of $37,052. The government was accusing them of using a cash fund to operate the hotel during years 1946-1948. The couple claimed that they had accumulated the cash before 1933 (when there were some applicable changes to tax laws).

The prosecutor said “there was no such fund and the Hollands accumulated the money by failing to report all their earnings.” They were cleared of evasion for the first two years, and the amount of the evasion was reduced to $6,000. Lu was fined $10,000 and sentenced to two years in a federal prison. Ethel was fined $5,000. Lu’s sentence was later reduced to a year and a day.

The conviction did no lasting damage to their standing in the community, and they continued to be enthusiastic boosters. In 1959, as a member of Golden’s Centennial Celebration committee, Lu acquired a yoke of oxen and a covered wagon to be in the centennial parade. In 1965, Ethel was named “Woman of the Year” by the Golden Business and Professional Women’s Club.

The Holland House closed in 1987 and reopened as the Table Mountain Inn in 1991.
