The Creek
During last night’s City Council meeting, the City Manager announced that they will probably re-open the Creek on Monday. Councilor Dale (a public health guy) expressed concern because he thinks we may see a second wave of infections before long. The City Manager said if that happens, they can reinstate the closure.

Golden History Moment
I recently bought this photo from an online dealer, and I was looking forward to sharing it with my readers. Then I began to fret–what if I was wrong–what if it only looked like Golden but wasn’t really?
So I checked it out with two of the most knowledgeable train guys I know: Dan Abbott who wrote THE definitive book about the Colorado Central Railroad (Golden’s own!), and Bill Robie, who’s been volunteering with the Colorado Railroad Museum since the 1960s. They not only assured me that it was taken in Golden, but had a pretty good guess as to the occasion when the picture was taken.
This was a November, 1951 “football special” train, chartered specifically to take the Mines football team and their supporters from Golden to Colorado Springs for a championship game. It was the first time since 1942 that Mines had made it to the championship, so there was a lot of excitement about the game.
It was also the first time in 16 years that a passenger train had been in the Golden depot, so there was a lot of excitement amongst railroad buffs.
The November 22, 1951 Colorado Transcript reported: Rocky Mountain Railroad club members were in evidence all over the railroad yards as they photographed the first passenger train to come to Golden in 16 years.
A different article stated that 350 cheering rooters rode the special to the Springs–it is reported that there were more Miners and Golden rooters in the stands than there were C. C. fans–everyone downtown turned out to watch the miners celebrate Monday morning when the student body took the day off to properly praise the football team–big event was the march on Coors where they received most hospitable attention–the fact the C. C. is holding up the gate receipts until the goal posts are paid for didn’t dampen the Miners’ spirit one bit.
Sounds like a fun game and an unforgettable trip!
