Thursday night’s City Council meeting was very well attended, and about 25 citizens offered public comment. Retired City Manager Mike Bestor encouraged Council to pursue the opportunity to buy the Coors property on 10th Street. Another citizen asked them to reconsider our traffic calming techniques. A third complimented the city on the job they did in replacing a water tank. The other citizens asked Council to place a moratorium on new construction until we can change our municipal code to better reflect our planning documents. In general, people asked for greater setbacks (distance between the curb and the buildings) and reduced building height in residential neighborhoods.
Following the business meeting, Council had a study session to discuss the possibility of a moratorium. They agreed to bring the issue to a vote in a future meeting. This isn’t something they can do overnight: they must introduce a possible ordinance in one business meeting and vote to adopt it in a later meeting. Accordingly, the ordinance will be introduced at their March 7th meeting and voted on at the March 21st meeting. If it does pass, we face a lot of work. We can’t just say that we don’t want any new construction–property owners have a right to build things on their property. We need to use the pause provided by the moratorium to define acceptable forms of construction.
