GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The October 15, 1959 Colorado Transcript had several articles that exemplified the busy, growing town. The Chamber of Commerce was spearheading an effort to build a new municipal center, which would include city offices, police and fire departments, council chambers, an office for the chamber of commerce, a library, the history museum, a recreation center, and an outdoor swimming pool. Supporters were hoping that the voters would approve a $350,000 bond issue on November 3rd. (They did.)
Golden High School was celebrating homecoming that weekend with a bonfire and pep rally on Friday night and a football game on Saturday night.
The School of Mines was planning their homecoming for the following weekend. Their theme for the year was “Miner 59er.” Their library, which had been completed in 1954, was being named for Arthur Lakes. Lakes was the school’s first geology professor and discovered many dinosaur bones in the Golden-Morrison area. The School also planned to dedicate their new gymnasium, which was replacing a gym built in 1908. The new gym would remain unnamed until 1974, when it was named after alumnus and athlete Russell Volk.
Mitchell Elementary, still located on 12th Street at that time, was planning a carnival on October 21st.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
