Join the Women—Mines Community Alliance (W-MCA) and the Arthur Lakes Library as we host a Community Conversation that will focus on several themes that show up in the book, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, and the Hulu streaming series by the same name.
This facilitated conversation will be led by Dr. Paula Farcaand will explore the themes from the book and series that are applicable to our lives today. The event is open to everyone at Mines, as well as the Golden community. Register now to come share your thoughts and be part of the conversation.

City Staff and the applicant will be available for more in-depth conversations regarding the application. City Planning and housing staff will be available for all meetings.

Golden History Moment

Sewer lines had been installed south of Clear Creek in 1908. Northsiders remained divided as to whether they wanted to pay for sewer lines.
The March 17, 1910 Colorado Transcript included a guest column by John Treffeisen, long time proprietor of the North Side Meat Market, encouraging his fellow northsiders to install sewer lines north of the Creek.
I have heard strangers say they would like the North side as well as the South, on account of wind and mud, but their objection is the great drawback–no sewerage.… Go in your outhouses and see what condition they are in, and remember that every year or two you have to make a new place. Look at your waste water from washing, that creates flies and disagreeable smells…. Go up to the school house on the North side and see the condition. You send your children where they are liable to bring home dreadful diseases.
Perhaps Mr. Treffeisen’s graphic arguments turned the tide of public opinion. A north side sewer was installed later that year.
