Golden History Moment
The October 2, 1958 Colorado Transcript included a brief article announcing that Phillip and Margaret Isley, residents of Lookout Mountain, planned to run for office. Phillip hoped to represent Colorado in the U.S. House of Representatives. Margaret was running for State representative for Jefferson County.
In explaining their platform, the Isleys declare their objectives include a declaration of peace and disarmament race, establishing a federal world government, creation of a federal peace economy planning commission and appropriation of $2,000,000,000 annually for the next 10 years for conservation of natural resources.
They didn’t win, so why was this article of interest? It mentions that the couple operated a health food store in Lakewood. That store was the first in the chain that is now known as Natural Grocers. According to the company website, the chain now includes 159 stores in 20 states!
