Golden History Moment
The February 16, 1956 Colorado Transcript urged people to respect the barricades in from of the Opera House building. They stated that the front wall of the structure could crumble at any time. “Warning signs are being torn down and people are walking immediately under the wall that is cracked and leaning at least six inches out over the sidewalk.”
The article goes on to state that one of the four 60 foot trusses had broken. When that happened, it pushed out the front wall. Then a wind storm shift the building and caused the truss to drop another 6-8 feet. The city then condemned the building, which housed the Son Flower shop, Ace Hi Tavern, Ellis Department store, and Fender’s Bakery.
The owner of the flower shop, Buelah Son, kept her shop open in defiance of the city order. She hired an engineer and evaluated the damage and the cost of fixing it. Two weeks later, she sold her flower shop business and bought the Opera House building. She repaired the damage and divided the former Opera House space on the second floor into individual offices for rent.
Mrs. Son had opened her flower business in 1933, in a corner inside the Foss Drug Store. She soon outgrew that space and moved to her own store on 13th Street. In 1952, she moved yet again, this time to a 2600 square foot space at 1218 Washington (the Opera House).
Mrs. Son wrote a gardening column for the Transcript from 1937-1943. The newspaper often praised Mrs. Son’s taste and creativity. She designed special events, including weddings, and once turned the Mines Field House into a pine forest. Boys from the CCC camp at Red Rocks assisted in this endeavor by providing four truck loads of trees.
Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
