Center for Railroad Photography & Art Winners
Every year, the Center for Railroad Photography & Art holds a contest that attracts some of today’s finest and most creative photographers. Those who placed in this year’s program will have their photographs displayed at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden into 2023. The Museum’s goal is to showcase not only Colorado’s rich railroad history, but also the many creative people—around the world—who keep the spirit of railroading alive and well in the 21st century.

Beebe and Clegg: Their Enduring Photographic Legacy
This exhibit focuses on Lucius Beebe who—joined in 1941 by his life partner Charles Clegg—introduced railroad photography and the world of railroading to popular audiences in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Employing dramatic images and sweeping promotional strategies, this dynamic duo created more than 30 books on railroading and Western Americana, demonstrating that the railroad serves the nation as an icon of the American experience.
Romance Along the Rails: The Phenomenon of Beebe and Clegg
In this companion exhibit, learn more about this fascinating couple and view correspondence, Colorado-specific publications, and other physical reminders of their love affair with Colorado and its narrow gauge railroading legacy.

Golden History Park (11th & Arapahoe): The outdoor setting re-creates the look and feel of a late 1800's mountain ranch complete with gardens, a working blacksmith shop, schoolhouse and chicken coop (chickens included).

The main floor exhibits feature specimens from many Colorado mining districts, other global localities and an introductory video on area geology. The Special Exhibit Room hosts prominent precious metal and invited displays. The main gallery also showcases historic mining murals by Irwin Hoffman.
The basement contains numerous exhibits regarding radioactivity, fossils, basic geology, gemstones, meteorites, ultraviolet minerals and underground mining illumination. The outdoor geologic trail features seven outcrops with various geologic and paleontological points of interest, including fossilized dinosaur tracks, logs and leaves.

Thorns & Spikes | The 4 Common Corners

It is amazing to see what comes from a creative group of people challenging each other to create original quilts for a theme. They take 4 months to develop and create their work for each theme. This exhibit is the result of the THEME challenge "Thorns and Spikes" for a group who all live in the Common 4 Corner states, and the only rule is that their work represents these states.

Learn how to be prepared for the weather when you venture into the parks. We'll have crafts and games!
Ages 3 - 5 years with an adult. We ask that your child has reached his/her third birthday before participating in this class.
This is an outdoor program which includes portions with an educator and portions on your own. Dress for the weather (jackets, sweatshirts, hats, sunscreen) and wear comfortable walking shoes. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Mines Museum of Earth Science: This museum proudly houses a number of significant artifacts. Among its treasures is one of Colorado’s two Goodwill moon rocks, obtained during the Apollo 17 mission. Additionally, it showcases the esteemed Colorado State Mineral Collection, originating from the Bureau of Mines in the 1890s. Free admission on April 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and April 28 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Colorado Railroad Museum: Stroll the museum’s 15-acre railyard with over 100 locomotives, passenger and freight cars, cabooses and even a G-scale garden railway. Colorado’s railroad history comes to life as you explore trains dating from the 1880s to 1980s. Free admission for Jeffco. Doors and exhibits are open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and train rides depart between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Capacity is limited and advanced reservations are recommended.
National Drug Take Back Day

Where: Sheriff's Office Headquarters, 200 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden, CO
Twice a year the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office joins law enforcement agencies nationwide to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from our nation’s medicine cabinets. The Drug Take-Back Day provides an opportunity for the public to surrender expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications for destruction. These drugs are a potential source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety. The DEA holds the National Drug Take-Back events in April and October of each year.
This one-day effort is intended to bring national focus to the issue of increasing pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse.
- The program is anonymous.
- Prescription and over-the-counter solid dosage medications, (tablets and capsules) are accepted.
- Intravenous solutions, injectables, needles and oxygen containers will not be accepted.
- Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not a part of this initiative.
- The prescriptions should be removed from the original containers and placed in a plastic bag prior to dropping off.

This event celebrates over three decades of extraordinary progress made on behalf of millions of victims since the passage of the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA). This commemorative week has been set aside since 1981 to honor crime victims and the first responders, advocates, counselors, and others who assist them in their time of need, as well as the law enforcement personnel who work to bring offenders to justice.
We envision the day when all victims are strengthened by the response they receive, organizations are resilient in response to challenges, and communities are able to seek collective justice and healing.

History of Outdoor Gear in Colorado

No escape to nature is complete without a trip to an outdoor recreational store or a browse through online offerings. Nowhere is this more true than in Colorado. Holubar, Gerry, and Frostline are among the outdoor companies that helped establish Colorado as a hub of innovation for the outdoor industry after World War II. Rachel S. Gross argues that the success of these outdoor gear pioneers was predicated not just on creating functional equipment but also on selling an authentic, anticommercial outdoor identity. In other words, shopping for the woods was also about being—or becoming—the right kind of person. Demonstrating that outdoor culture is commercial culture, Gross examines Americans’ journey toward outdoor expertise by tracing the development of the nascent outdoor goods industry, the influence of World War II on its growth, and the boom years of outdoor businesses.
