GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

1100 Block of Washington Avenue – enlarge

It’s time for another episode of DATE THAT PHOTO! This game is played by identifying landmarks that have changed or not yet been built. I use those changes to identify the earliest and latest years that the picture could have been taken.

The streetscape project has been completed. You can see this by the row of young trees lining the street, by the planter box at the corner of 11th and Washington, and the change from diagonal parking to parallel parking.

Before (left) and After (right) the streetscape. Notice how the level of the street has been leveled up to make the curbs a uniform distance from the street – enlarge

A subtler change from that project was the leveling of the street. Prior to the streetscape, there were sections of the sidewalk that were significantly higher than the street. The streetscape eliminated those irregularities to give us curbs of uniform height.

The streetscape was constructed during 1992 and our first full summer with a “scaped” street was 1993. So this photo was taken no earlier than 1993.

The sign saying “Chinese Restaurant” has disappeared behind another, newer building – enlarge

The second point is the sign saying “Chinese Restaurant” on the right side of the image. That sign was no longer visible after the Frontier building was constructed in the year 2000.

Before (left) – The old Ford dealership building was still on the northwest corner of 11th and Washington. After (right) – The Golden Hotel has appeared in its place – enlarge

Likewise, the Golden Hotel doesn’t appear in the image, and it was also built in the year 2000. Based on those two missing buildings, the photo was taken before the year 2000.

Clear Creek Commons–the senior apartment building on the northeast corner of 11th and Washington–is also missing, but that was built in 2003, so it doesn’t help narrow the time range.

Based on the streetscape and Golden Hotel/Frontier building, the photo was taken between 1993 and 2000.

One last point: I’m not sure the Visitors Center has been built, but I can’t see that corner well enough to say that with confidence. It was built in 1997, so if it isn’t there, that narrows the range still more, to 1993 and 1997.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
