6PM Buffalo Bill: How his Tumultuous Past turned into Box-office Gold @ Golden History Museum
This is a hybrid event. You can attend in-person or virtually.
Buffalo Bill has gone down in history as one of the greatest showmen who ever lived. However, before Bill Cody was famous (and even afterwards), he had a few of his own demons to put to rest. Led by returning presenter and historian, Randi Samuelson-Brown, this talk will focus on Buffalo Bill’s earlier years as the west opened, his enduring support of social justice and his later years when a rather tumultuous past turned into box-office gold, despite a rather precarious business sense. He can probably thank his wife for that last part.
Randi Samuelson-Brown is a native of Colorado, originally from Golden. Her ancestors came to the state in the 1880s/1890s, a fact she is proud of. She is the author of The Beaten Territory, an award-nominated historical fiction set in a vice-riddled Denver and Leadville during the 1890s. She lives in Denver, CO.

Golden History Moment
In the years after World War II, Golden’s population exploded and houses were being built all over town. The July 22, 1948 Transcript reported on the City’s new gravel crusher. Golden had long been platted as far south as 24th Street, but most of those streets were fairly theoretical, with few or no houses along them. With new subdivisions popping up all over town, the City had a sudden, tremendous need for gravel. On July 22nd, Vernon Drive (a one-block street between 21st and 23rd Streets) was waiting for its load of gravel.
The Welch ditch goes through that neighborhood, and the new roads required bridges to cross the ditch. 21st and 23rd Streets had automobile bridges. 22nd Street dead-ended, with Vernon Drive on the other side of the ditch. City workers were able to build a pedestrian bridge at that spot, thus saving the cost of hiring a construction crew.
The City and the Martin Construction Company were also installing a 5 foot culvert at 21st and Ford Streets that week. Three new houses were being built near that intersection.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for funding the online collection of historic newspapers.
