From the Golden Transcript’s archives:
The first Buffalo Bill Days was celebrated in 1946, which was the 100th anniversary of William “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s birth.  The celebration included a carnival with five rides and six concessions, a parade on Friday night, an airshow, a beauty show in front of the LaRay Hotel (now the Table Mountain Inn), a soap box derby, a tug-of-war featuring Mines fraternities at the Washington Avenue bridge, fireworks from Cemetery Hill (now Goldco Circle), and a buffalo barbecue in front of the Labor Temple (now the Buffalo Rose).  More than 30,000 people were expected to visit Buffalo Bill’s grave that weekend.

The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the old issues, and they’re currently up to June of 1948. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org.  You can contribute to the cost of the digitizing project with a donation to the Golden History Museum.
