Budget, Scat, Moratorium, Music, Flies, Cheap Theater, and Unloading Junk

The Citizens Budget Advisory Committee (CBAC) will meet at 7:30 this morning in City Council Chambers. Staff will express some concern over lower-than-budget sales tax revenue so far this year, which may indicate that the local economy is slowing. Staff will provide updates on the planned purchase of the Coors building and land along 10th Street. Finally, they will discuss the uses for the proposed lodging tax. Citizen groups have formed to lobby for various uses. Council recently discussed how/whether use of the lodging tax should be tied to the work done by the Golden Investment Forum Task Force.

Jeffco Open Space will continue their Land Stewardship Series tonight from 6-7:30 with Animal Traces. Alicia Vermilye and Mary Ann Bonnell, Jeffco Open Space Visitor Services, will talk about the traces animals leave behind. By understanding scat and tracks, we can better understand how our local wildlife are using the environment. Ages 16 and up | Free | Location: Jeffco Open Space – Ponderosa Room, 700 Jefferson County Parkway, Ste 100 (map)

The Planning Commission will meet at 6:30 this evening in City Council Chambers. This will be a study session, so no public comment will be allowed. The Commission has submitted a first batch of proposed code changes to City Council, and Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on that first set on June 13th. This next subset of changes will consider whether Rooftop / Inset Decks should be permitted. (Some neighbors object to the loss of privacy in their own yards.) Allowable Encroachments into the Graduated Setbacks will also be considered. They will also discuss Lot assemblages / Lot splits. This is a technique that some developers have been using to fit several multi-family buildings into a relatively small amount of property. Loopholes in our processes have allowed these developments to proceed without Planning Commission approval or any form of public input. See their meeting packet for more information….

The 120 day moratorium on new building was approved on March 21st, so we’re nearly halfway through it. Citizens are watching these code revisions carefully, so they can decide whether they still feel the need for a Citizens Ballot Initiative to force changes.

There will be a Band Concert at Bell Middle School (map) tonight from 6:30-8PM.
