April 1 – Golden>> GOLDEN VOLCANO COMES TO LIFE!
Long considered inactive, the Golden Volcano, south of Golden near I-70, yesterday erupted what appeared to be a small Plinian column. It is too soon to know if it will develop fully into a Plinian eruption, like the one that destroyed Pompeii.
Thanks to Keenan Lee, Colorado School of Mines Geology Professor, retired, for this breaking news.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The April 1, 1965 Colorado Transcript reported that the School of Mines would be celebrating Engineers’ Day on Saturday. Several of the School’s best and brightest were competing for the title of “Mr. Engineer.” The day would end with a dance at which at “Engineers’ Day Queen” would be selected. There were so few women enrolled at the School of Mines in 1965 that women from other colleges were invited to vie for the title.
Bill Robie was attending Mines at the time, and photographed several of the competitions, including single jacking (one man drilling), double jacking (two men working together) and hand steeling (object: greatest depth in a defined period of time).
The competitions are based on 19th century mining skills. For the hand mucking competition, students sought to hand-fill and ore cart, push it to the end of a track and dump out the material in the fastest time.
Several Golden barbers were invited to judge the beard contest. Del Miller appears on the far left. Del’s Tonsorial Parlor at 1210 Washington Avenue still bears his name. Only seniors were allowed to participate in this contest, and seniors were distinguished by their Stetson hats.
In the game of Push Ball, two teams competed in trying to maneuver a gigantic ball overhead to reach the end line. The game continued until the buzzer signaled the end of the game (or too many players were wounded for play to continue).
Thanks, Bill Robie, for this view of Engineers Day, 1965! This year’s E-Days will run from April 14-16th.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
