Golden History Moment
This photo shows the 1863 First Baptist Church of Golden, which used to stand at 12th & Jackson (now occupied by Tributary Food Hall). This was one of several 19th century churches in downtown Golden that were outgrown by their congregations in the years after World War II. Golden’s population had grown from 3,175 in 1940 to 7,118 in 1960, and church congregations grew apace.
Golden’s Baptists bought land for their new church at 19th and Washington, about 7 blocks from their old location. The sanctuary in the new building accommodated 375 and there were 24 Sunday school rooms. There was also a dedicated parking lot with capacity for 75 cars.
The first church services were held in the new church on January 15, 1961.
At that time, downtown Golden had a severe shortage of parking spaces, so the fate of the old church was inevitable. By the end of October, the 1863 church was gone and Golden had a new parking lot.
Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
