Some of Golden’s Public Art Collection – click to enlarge

9AM Public Art Commission @ City Hall
The Public Art Commission will meet with representatives of a group that has been investigating the idea of a public art installation to honor Golden women. At present, the Public Art Collection has a significant lack of females:

There are thirteen statues of men—Adolph Coors, Checkmate at 6th & 19th, the fly fisherman near the Golden Hotel, the prospector behind the Visitors Center, Buffalo Bill, Ben Nighthorse-Campbell near Taco Bell, the two musicians behind the Golden Hotel, the Minuteman near the history museum, the bicyclist, the kayaker, the cowboy near Miners Alley, and the other cowboy at Fossil Trace. Young boys are found in the musicians, the rodeo kids, Helping Hand, the newsboy, and Eddie at Bat. A total of 13 men and five boys.

There is one statue of a woman—Winter Wind, the Indian woman at the SE corner of the Washington Ave. bridge. Also some young girls—Helping Hand at 13th and Washington, two in the Secret Garden near the library, that Victorian-ish one in the friendship garden, the rodeo kids behind the Golden Hotel, and two of the musicians behind the Golden Hotel. A total of one woman and seven girls.

They will also discuss several small projects that they are considering.

A group is currently raising funds for a bronze sculpture honoring Golden’s firefighters. The grouping will cost $150,000. The Civic Foundation has provided significant support, and the Public Art Commission may consider providing some backing as well.

The Public Art Commission has received $50K/year for several years, and is requesting $80K/year beginning next year. They anticipate carrying over $44K for use in future years.

Golden History Moment

Golden grew by leaps and bounds during the 1940s and -50s. Several builders were at work around town, many of them constructing several similar houses at once. One such was getting ready to create a new neighborhood on adjacent lots on 4th Street.

“Recent” Building Permits: 1008 4th St., 1012 4th St., 1016 4th St., 1020 4th St., 1024 4th St., 2301 Cheyenne Street, 900 Archer Street (house now gone), 312 Columbine St. – click to enlarge

The December 2, 1954 Colorado Transcript announced that the City had recently issued nine building permits. Five of them went to the 4th Street builder. Two others went for single houses, one on Cheyenne and the other on Archer Street. The last two went for a remodeling project on Columbine Street and a car port addition on 11th. The Archer Street and 11th Street houses are both gone, but the others are still here.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
