CITY MEETING
6:30PM City Council Regular Business Meeting @ City Hall
Comments sent to the CouncilComments@CityofGolden.net are available here. The document includes an interesting summary of the noise mitigation problems in Beverly Heights and a good set of questions about the 2024 budget.
Comments sent to the PublicComment@cityofgolden.net address will be added to tonight’s meeting packet sometime after 3PM. If you want to comment in person (on anything other than the Junction Annexation), be there at 6:30.
Tonight’s consent agenda contains only one item: Travis Abbott will be appointed to the Sustainability Board.
They will read proclamations regarding National First Responders Day and Veterans Day.
The Thriving Communities Director will report on last year’s grant recipients.
They will hold a public hearing concerning the Junction Annexation at the north end of the city (map). They will then hold a second public hearing concerning the initial zoning for that property. Learn more about the annexation.
CITY COUNCIL ELECTION INFORMATION
Thanks to everyone who sent additions and corrections to my CITY COUNCIL ELECTION 2023 page. I’ve added a link to the Hunger Free Golden candidate survey, corrected the link to the Golden United housing survey, and corrected Lisa Vitry’s phone number.
I received several grouchy comments about my inclusion of the Golden Good Government League endorsements. Everyone pointed out that Heather Schneider was a member of that organization. They did say in their press release that Heather wasn’t involved in this year’s candidate interviews. In my view, that group is entitled to evaluate the candidates, as they’ve been doing since 1987. Their press release now appears under the “Candidate Guides and Commentaries from Golden Organizations” section, along with the documents compiled by the Golden Transcript, Golden Cultural Alliance, Hunger-Free Golden, Golden United, and City of Golden.
I do not plan to publish endorsements by individuals, but if any other Golden-based groups want to publish their collective thoughts, I will add them to the list.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The October 24, 1921 Oredigger (the Colorado School of Mines newspaper) announced that the U.S. Bureau of Mines Rescue Car had left Golden. This was one of 10 cars stationed in mining districts throughout the country. When a mine disaster occurred, the closest rescue car was deployed to the site to provide equipment and expertise.
The car is equipped with different types of mine rescue apparatus, oxygen storage tanks, resuscitating devices, safety lamps, life line, Orsat apparatus for gas analysis, an ample supply of first-aid materials, and, in general, all equipment needed for carrying on rescue and recovery work at a mine disaster, as well as the routine first-aid and mine rescue training.
Between disasters, the cars served as mobile classrooms, providing “practical miners” and students at mining schools with safety training. They offered a fifteen hour first aid class and a twenty hour mine rescue class. During the twelve days that the rescue car spent in Golden, thirty-five Mines students completed the mine rescue course and twenty-two of them completed the first aid course.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
