Speaking of historic buildings…

Territorial-Era Buildings in Golden – click to enlarge

The Golden Landmarks Association and similarly history-minded folks are working to establish a Territorial District, to heighten awareness of the rather impressive number of buildings still in Golden from our pre-statehood era. The Historic Preservation Board has discussed the request at a couple of recent meetings and now they would like your opinion on the subject. Please take the survey on Guiding Golden to tell the Historic Preservation Board what you think.

Personally, I think it’s pretty cool that we still have so many buildings from that era, and I would like to draw attention to both the era and the buildings. If you’re curious as to where the buildings are, you’ll find most of them on this map.

Golden History Moment

Sarell Residence at 1501 East Street

Yesterday’s article about William Sarell, Golden’s long-time hardware magnate, caught the attention of Traci Case. She and Pete Gotseff live in “the Sarell Residence” at 1501 East Street (map). We both wondered if that’s where William Sarell lived. The answer is no–but it’s related! The East Street home belonged to his son Edward.

The house was built for Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Rudd. Mrs. Rudd was born Jessie Sarell–William’s daughter and Ed’s sister. The Rudds wound up living in several different cities as he was transferred for work, so they rented out the home for a number of years.

In 1921, Ed Sarell and wife bought the home from the Rudds and raised their five children there. Ed lived there until his death in 1964. His wife had preceded him in death. The house is a City of Golden Residential Landmark (and very pretty).
