Golden’s Pizza Hut has moved to a new location in the King Soopers shopping center (map) . They will open at 11AM today and the first 50 parties in the door will get a free cheese or pepperoni pizza! The Chamber will help them celebrate from 1:30-2:30 with a ribbon cutting. Pizza Hut’s Manager, Lorna Crawford, has run the Golden store for nearly 40 years (and still looks about 35, herself). She has been incredibly supportive of Golden’s schools and other community organizations for decades.

City Council
City Council will meet at 6:30 in City Council Chambers. They will consider a request to allow sidewalk seating for the planned restaurants in the old mortuary building at 1100 Washington Avenue.
They will discuss the use of the parking lot between Miners Alley and Arapahoe Street & 12th and 13th Streets. The Foss Family owns part of that lot, and they want the ability to use their part of it for occasional public events. They also want to disallow downtown employee use to free up spaces for customers. The Stillman family (Ace Hi Tavern building) needs to build a new trash & recycling enclosure, and that will also have to go somewhere in that lot.
Several City Boards (including the Downtown Development Authority, the Parks Board, the Citizen’s Budget Advisory Committee, and the Historic Preservation Board) have recently listened to a presentation regarding the proposed sale and redevelopment of the 1869 Astor House. City Staff will report back tonight. The proposal involves selling the building to the owners of the Dove Inn for $550,000. They will then develop the first floor as a juice bar and the second floor as a micro-hotel. The back yard would be developed by a second company, which proposes to build a structure at the north end of the yard (near Meyers) and host outdoor events.
Several members among the various boards found the proposals appealing. Several others were greatly alarmed at the prospect of still more demands on downtown parking. Some expressed concern about noise levels for the adjacent residential neighborhood. A number of people expressed concern about selling the building to a private entity, which might then demolish it. Some people wonder why, if the city is going to sell it, they are selling it for such a “sweetheart” price. (Many citizens have fantasized about buying it themselves for that price and just living there…”the cheapest house in Golden.”)
The Historic Preservation Board was the last group to be consulted. They were not a happy group. The proposals for the Astor House were reviewed by a small committee in secret (unpublicized) meetings. No one from the Historic Preservation Board was included in the committee, and Monday night (July 8th) was the first time they had been consulted. Moreover, they didn’t receive a meeting packet before Monday’s meeting and had never seen the proposals. They instructed city staff NOT to indicate that they had “checked with the Historic Preservation Board.” They said that in order to fulfill their responsibilities, they would need time to review the proposals, submit questions, and accept public input.
About 15 community members attended that meeting, offering comments about the importance of preserving the building and expressing general disapprobation about the secretive way the whole process has been conducted.
City Staff is recommending that Council allow them to negotiate with the Dove Inn owners and bring a deal to Council on August 8th. Council cannot sell the Astor House without a vote of the citizens. If they decide they want to sell it, they hope to have ballot language by August 22nd to add to the November ballot.
