About Us

Golden is a special place.  In a world that’s becoming increasingly amorphous, with one town flowing into the next, and the same stores and restaurants appearing in all of them, Golden retains a sense of place, with unique topography, a historic downtown, and a deep appreciation of its roots.

That’s why Goldentoday.com exists.  We like carving out one small, beautiful piece of the world and focusing on that exclusively:  Golden’s events, Golden’s government, Golden’s businesses, and Golden’s cultural institutions.  With all due respect and affection for our neighboring towns, you will never read about their events on this website.

This is not the official City website: it’s a labor of love by three people who really like living in Golden, and want to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with other members of the community.  With that said, we do have some much-appreciated partners.  Goldentoday.com is the official online home of the Golden Cultural Alliance, and we do our best to make sure people know about museum exhibits, lectures, tours, and concerts.  Our sponsors and advertisers make Goldentoday.com possible, and they find that our highly targeted Golden audience appreciates their support.

Meet the Team

Barb Warden (Publisher) started Goldentoday.com in 2007, and is responsible for the daily announcements and most of the site content.  She has lived in Golden since 1987.  She and her husband raised their daughter here–a 2011 graduate of Golden High School.  Barb has written three books about Golden (Guidebook to Golden Colorado, Funiculars of Golden Colorado, and Olde Golden Christmas).  Barb’s “day job” is building websites through her company, Table Mountain Web Design.  A 1996 graduate of Leadership Golden, she also served on the steering committee and Board of Directors, and was the Board President in 2009.  Barb is one of the founders of Golden Beer Talks and created the Golden Colorado Online Yard Sale.  In 2010 she received the Mayor’s Award for service to the Golden community (for this website); in 2011 she received the Civic Award from the Chamber of Commerce (for this website); in 2014 she was named a Living Landmark by the Golden Landmarks Association (for the website and her published books), and in 2016 she was recognized at the International Women’s Day Luncheon for her work on local news (this website).

Tracy Evanko (Editor) joined Goldentoday.com in the fall of 2007.  She grew up in Fort Collins and moved to Golden in 1992.  She and her husband raised two children here–both graduates of Golden High School.  Tracy keeps track of the comings and goings of Golden businesses and maintains our Business Directory.  She also maintains the Goldentoday.com calendar.  Tracy volunteered in many capacities with the Golden schools—from classroom helper, to PTSA President, to newsletter editor—and worked as an assistant librarian at Golden High School before retiring in 2014.  She was also an integral part of GREAT, which ran Golden film festivals and initiated Golden’s Movies & Music in the Park.  Tracy received a Mayor’s Award for Excellence in 2012 for making exceptional contributions to our community.

Dave Powers (Photgrapher) has been contributing photos to Goldentoday.com since 2010.  Born and raised in Maine (thus, the cool accent), Dave moved to Golden in 1988.  He served as the Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Colorado School of Mines (CSM).  Dave’s volunteer activities have included Buffalo Bill Museum and Gravesite and the Clear Creek History Park.  He has served on the boards of Foothills Art Center, the Golden Visitors Center and the Golden Civic Foundation (including two years as President), and has served on the School of Mines Alumni Association Task Force, the Futures Task Force for the Jefferson Symphony, and the CSM History Committee.  Retired since 2003, Dave now devotes time to his jazz ensemble, which frequently performs at the Golden Hotel, Windy Saddle Cafe, and at special events.  He’s also an avid (and expert) photographer.  His photos of Golden events frequently grace Goldentoday.com.  As Dave says, “With pictures it’s best to be a fly on the wall … there are lots of images out there, what catches the eye? Look for that special moment.”  Dave received the Golden Rotary Club’s Service Before Self award, and is an Honorary Colonel in the School of Mines 115th Engineer Regiment.
