Golden History Moment

Food King Store at 19th and Jackson Streets
February 3, 1966 Colorado Transcript

In February 1966, Golden was celebrating the grand opening of Food King, a new supermarket in a brand new building at 19th and Jackson Streets.

One year later we had another grand opening at the store. Food King had been purchased by Denver-area chain King Soopers.

King Soopers closed in November of 1976 and the building was purchased by Golden State Bank. It remains a bank (now U S Bank) to this day.

King Soopers returned to Golden with a much bigger store on South Golden Road in 1996. (Which means that the “new” King Soopers store is 25 years old!)

Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
