Golden History Moment
Back in April, I asked my readers to suggest some history topics they would like me to research and write about, so every now and then, I pick one of those topics. By request, I’ve been doing some research about a YWCA Camp that used to be on Lookout Mountain. This is what I’ve been able to learn.
In 1918, Mrs. Walter Best donated fifteen acres and a lodge building in memory of her mother and father. The camp was located less than a mile east of the Mount Vernon Country Club. The property included a flat area where the lodge, mess hall, and tent-cabins were located. The rest of the land was rolling and timbered with yellow pine and Douglas fir.
The camp accommodated seventy girls, from teenagers through young, employed women. It was intended to provide a safe, fun, healthy, and inexpensive way for young ladies to vacation. The camp offered horseback riding, tennis, basketball, baseball, and crafts. The facility was also rented out for conferences and dances.
The camp operated at least through mid-1952. The Transcript article is a bit vague, but it may have been leased to a different organization at that time.
